The six-foot-nine 16-year-old forward, who shared top honours in last year’s Māori Sports Awards with his father, axeman Jason Wynyard, has committed to the University of Kentucky Wildcats college programme for 2016.
He’s currently a New Zealand Breakers development player and has played for the Junior Tall Blacks.
Wynyard had scholarship offers from two other colleges, but told Kentucky newspaper The Courier Journal that Kentucky promised to push him to the max. "Kentucky seemed like the best fit for me," he said.
Father and son Tai and Jason Wynyard accepted the supreme Albie Pryor Memorial award at last year's Māori Sports Person of the Year Awards.
