Big turnout for waka ama nationals

More than 1500 teams from 61 clubs in Aotearoa and have signed up for the annual Activepost Waka Ama Sprint Nationals starting at Lake Karapiro today.

There are also crews from Papua New Guinea and Australia. Women outnumber men, and more than half the 2700 competitors are in the three under 19 grades. The clubs will compete for national honours in one, six and 12-paddler teams over distances of 250m, 500m, 1000m and 1500m. The tournament runs until Saturday.
