FREE DOWNLOAD: Raninikura Waitai-Henare 'Te Tuaititanga'

16-year-old singer-songwriter Raninikura Waitai-Henare's beautiful waiata talks about the "wonders of the North."

Raninikura Waitai-Henare comes from a whānau of musicians with her grandfather Bundy Waitai, mother Sandra, father Chris, uncles Daniel and Tiaki, aunties Samantha and Hera, sister Tia and brother-in-law Rawiri all in the family band. She is also a performer in Te Rōpū Kapa Haka o Muriwhenua, established by her parents in 2010.

"I grew up in the world of kapa haka. It always keeps me grounded, and it also makes me never forget who I am and my culture."

With lyrics by kaumatua Papa Te Kai, when composing the music for 'Te Tuaititanga' she looked to the land for inspiration.

"What inspired me to write this waiata was living at the very top of the North Island. All my life I grew up around the oceans, mountains and the beautiful wonders of the North."

Having moved to Hamilton to further her education, she says: "This song was based about my life living in the far North, about how all the oceans meet, the land, the mountains and the food that grows."
